Examples of Figures of Speech - Figurative Language
Figures of speech use word association to convey emotion and mood often in a non-literal sense. They are often used as a poetic device and can be found in many poems and poetry. The different figures of speech are used by famous poets to add a variety of elements to provide embellishment, emphasis, exclamation, floweriness, irony and lushness to poems and poetry. In Figurative Language we employ words in such a way that they differ somewhat from their ordinary signification in commonplace speech and convey our meaning in a more vivid and impressive manner than when we use them in their every-day sense which is why examples are so often included in poems and poetry. These Figures make speech more effective, they beautify and emphasize it and give to it a relish and piquancy. The principal figures as well as the most important and those most often used are:  Onomatopoeia, Simile, Metaphor, Personification, Allegory, Metonymy, Exclamation, Hyperbole, Apostrophe, Vision, Antithesis, Climax, Epigram, Interrogation and Irony. Definitions and examples of all of these elements can be accessed via the following links for examples, facts, info, information about many figures of speech including Alliteration, Allegory, Oxymoron, Onomatopoeia, Simile, Hyperbole, Metaphor and Zeugma - just click one of the above links.
