Examples Help! Action Verbs - the Definition and Meaning of an Action Verb

What is a verb? The meaning or definition of a Verb is as follows "A verb is a word which implies action or the doing of something, or it may be defined as a word which affirms, commands or asks a question". But what is a Action verb? 'Action verbs' are quite simply, something that a person or thing can do!

Examples of Alliteration in Beowulf
Beowulf is an example of Medieval Anglo-Saxon poetry which was written by monks c1100. Beowulf describes the adventures of a great Scandinavian warrior of the sixth century. The poem of Beowulf is distinguished by its heavy use of alliteration which was used instead of the modern rhyme. There are therefore many examples of alliteration in Beowulf, often three examples in every line. Like a rhyme, alliteration makes a poem easy to remember. Examples from Beowulf are as follows:

  • Cunningly creeping, a spectral stalker
  • Hot-hearted Beowulf was bent upon battle
  • He had often haunted Hrothgar's house
  • How glutted with gore he would guzzle his fill

Action Verbs

  • Action verbs are something that a person or thing can do may be used alone as the main verb of a sentence e.g. run, jump, reach, swim, walked, fell etc.
  • Action verbs can also be actions you can't see such as 'thought' or 'wanted'
  • Action verbs can be time-telling verbs. They tell when something takes place - in the present, in the future or in the past

Transitive and Intransitive Action Verbs
There are two types of action verbs: transitive and intransitive. A transitive verb conveys an action and is followed by an object that receives the action of the verb. Examples of Transitive action verbs: I cleaned the windows yesterday. I took my baby to the clinic. We hunt rabbits
An intransitive verb conveys an action but is not followed by an object. Examples of intransitive action verbs: The girl cried quietly.' He runs' or 'it falls'.
